# The Tanner Wall Of Dropbox

Eons ago during my time at Dropbox, our office at 333 Brannan Street had great furniture and bare walls after an early 2016 move-in.

It was a cozy place, full of nooks and crannies, with a library that felt like another world—a pink one. We moved in, settled down, and made our desks our own. The walls stayed bare.

Being a wannabe rebel, I started printing memes and leaving them around the office. One featured Glenn Danzig, formerly of the Misfits, carrying cat food while trying to look as punk as possible.

An occasional motivational poster or event announcement went up, but there was still an overwhelming amount of empty wall.

## The Lore

Around Christmas, when most of the office was empty, I started printing Photoshopped (in the ye olde days before AI made this a one-click affair and you actually need to know how realistic image manipulation) photos of myself. I wanted to see how long something so out of place could survive.

On one wall, a photo lasted only a few hours.

In a more secluded corner, another lasted a day.

On a concrete wall, a photo lasted a day. Then another day. And another. So I added another photo.

I left for the holidays. When I returned in the new year, the photos were still there. They had survived several office cleanings.

I was unsure what to do. My meme-mantic antics had gotten ahead of me. A few people had noticed and some asked if that was my face on the wall to which I said “no” to add further complexity. After a week, I decided to build the Tanner Wall.

So where did this come from? My team at Dropbox loved to Photoshop — yes in the good ‘ol days before AI made everyone a master image manipulator and serious artistry was required to do this right — each other in random locations or scenes. I contributed a template of my face with that perfect neutral, absent, 10 foot stare that begs itself to be slapped on to something else.

Eventually Tanner Wall became canonized on office tours. New hires and visitors would unintentionally make a pilgrimage coerced into the occasional selfie.

## Building Tanner Wall
Over the next six months, Tanner Wall was built out with one new Photoshopped picture every few days.

_Somehow_ the original Photoshop Template worked its way into the company Dropbox serving as creative inspiration for a few photos.

At one point rumors of my demise circled the office (I was in Palm Springs for a week) and Tanner Wall turned into a memorial shrine. I was deeply confused but equally moved when I returned. Many other Dropboxers were more confused I returned to the land of the living.

## RIP Tanner Wall December 2016 - June 2017

After six months of perseverance, Dropbox started adding posters and art around the office which spelt the natural end of Tanner Wall. It had served its purpose. A fleeting act of corporate anarchy morphed into office art. A commentary of a commentary made of silly Photoshopped memes.
